“I’m Derek. I’m 12 and I used to live on the streets of Kitale, Kenya. I never had a hope but God was always watching over me. I could have died but He kept me alive. Thanks to Him, my brother and I were adopted and now we live with a nice family who also helps street kids. Now, I want to collect cans to recycle, and use the money to help other street kids.”
Kids4StreetKids is an initiative of Until Then that encourages children of all ages to get involved with helping street kids all over the world. Educating and involving the next generation is crucial in helping street kids in the future. There are many ways you and your kids can get involved by participating in simple fundraising and awareness activities. Even the smallest donation will go a long way in helping street kids. Some fundraising ideas include…
-Host a lemonade stand on your street corner.
-Collect cans and bottles from your local neighborhood and then take them to a recycling center.
-Have a garage sale and sell those unused toys, clothes, and other things that clutter your garage.
You can then send your donations via the “Donate” button on the “Support” page.
REGGIE AND NEW HORIZONS
As part of Until Then’s “Kids for Street Kids” initiative, Reggie Hamer (10 years old) had a great idea to help street kids in the Seattle area. Every year, for Christmas, Reggie’s family would go to skid row in downtown Los Angeles to help “Jackets for Jesus” give out backpacks and meals to the homeless and needy. After moving to Seattle this year, his family was unable to continue this tradition, so Reggie had the idea of doing it in his own backyard. Working with his church, Overlake Christian Church, they had 38 backpacks donated, each filled with gift wrapped sweatshirts, socks, toiletries, and other important items that homeless youth would be in great need of. Working with New Horizons Ministry to distribute the backpacks, 38 kids on the street who probably would not have had any presents for Christmas, now have gifts to open thanks to Reggie.
